Schutz, Heinrich

Henrich Schutz(1585-1672), German composer, a choir boy in the court chapel at Kassel, he began to study law at Marburg in 1609, but he was sent to Venice to study music. Upon his return to Kassel in 1612, he became a court organist, and then was appointed Kappelmeister in Dresden. He devoted to the development of a semi-dramatic church music, he composed the first German opera "Dafne" and ballet "Orpheus and Eurydice", but the music to both is lost.
