Sembrich, Marcella

Marcella Sembrich(1858-1935), Polish/Ukrainian coloratura soprano, her original name was Prakseda Mercelina Kochanska. She studied piano and violin at the Lemberg Conservatory. In 1875 she entered the Vienna Conservatory that her remarkable voice was discovered, then went to Milan for further study for voice. She made her opera debut in 1877 in Athens as Elvira in Bellini's I Puritani. In 1883 she went to US to sing in the newly founded Metropolitan Opera Company on October 24, 1883. She sang in Vienna, Dresden, London and Metropolitan Opera.
