Sibelius, Jean

Jean Sibelius(1865-1957), Finnish composer, studied at the Helsinki University, went to Berlin to study with Becker, then to Leipzig with Busoni. In 1890 he went to Vienna to study with Goldmark and Fuchs(Hoping to study with Brahms, but got refused). In 1891 he returned to Finland and established himself as a most important Finnish composer. His music demonstrates his nationalistic inspiration, his melodic characteristics of Finnish folk songs became part of his creative repertoire. He composed 7 symphonies, tone poems(Tapiola, Finlandia, etc), a violin concerto, and other orchestral music.
