Simkus, Stasys

Stasys Simkus(1887-1943), Lithuanian composer, studied in Vilnius and Warsaw, pupil of Liadov and Jazeps Vitols, then further studied in Leipzig. In 1923, he opened a private music school in Klaipeda, which was converted into the the National Lithuanian Conservatory(now called the Klaipeda Stasys Simkus Conservatoire), he was professor there from 1931 to 1937. He also conducted the State Opera in Kaunas. He composed operas, a symphonic poem, choral works, piano and church music.
