"The Star Spangled Banner"-the national anthem of USA, lyrics by Francis Scott Key and music by John Smith.
John Stafford Smith(1750-1836), British composer, organist and musicologist, studied music with his father. In 1761 he joined the Chapel Royal as a choir boy. He established a reputation as composer and organist. He was elected as a member of the select Anacreonite Society. He composed music for society's constitutional song entitled "To Anachreon in Heaven," an adaptation of which is the tune to "The Star Spangled Banner." He is considered to be one of the earliest English musicologists.
